Political Correctness
Just why has Mr Clarkson been forced to apologise for using three words to describe our Prime Minister. The first may not be 100% accurate, but the other two certainly are. Mr Brown definitely lost the sight in one eye due to an accident. Whether he lost the eye, making him one-eyed, or still has two eyes, one of which is dysfunctional, I am not sure. However, he was born in Scotland making Scottish and his continued denial of the dire condition of the British economy, as well numerous other failings in his roles as Chancellor and Prime Minister, gives more than adequate support for the use the third of Mr Clarkson’s words.
If Mr Clarkson had implied that all Scottish people or all one-eyed people were idiots, he would have deserved the criticism he has received and an apology would be the minimum acceptable act of contrition. However, he did not make such assertions. The comparison with Ms Thatcher’s comment about a coloured tennis player is ludicrous. Any person, especially one with a high public profile, that believes that the use of such terms is in any way acceptable, even in jest, should be permanently and completely removed from public view.
If Political Correctness is going to be used as an excuse for preventing accurate descriptions of politicians, just because they don’t like it, it won’t be long before we lose some words from our dictionaries: corrupt, self-serving, greedy, two-faced and deceitful are my best guesses for the first to be banned.
